Tropical Cyclone Nargis hit the Southeast Asian country of Myanmar, also known as Burma with winds of up to 120 mph, last weekend leaving thousands dead and hundreds of thousands more people homeless. Priority needs are shelter and clean drinking water.

New Connecticut Teen Driving Laws

In a ceremony at Conard High School in West Hartford this afternoon, Governor M. Jodi Rell signed a bill into law that tightens restrictions on teen drivers and levies tougher penalties for teens who violate the rules of the road. The bill, spearheaded by Governor Rell, toughens restrictions and penalties, rolls back the evening curfew for teen drivers and provides for more on-the-road training of teen drivers.

“We have lost far too many irreplaceable young lives in recent years,” Governor Rell said. “What makes these terrible tragedies on our roads even harder to bear is that every single one is avoidable. This new law will strengthen our legal tools for training and protecting young drivers, and I believe it will help to save lives. Connecticut will now have some of the strongest graduated driving licensing regulations in the country.”

So, what does the new Connecticut Teen Driving Law mean for you?

Drivers under 18 must be off the road by 11 p.m., one hour earlier than now; exceptions are allowed for jobs, school and religious reasons.
Parents must attend two hours of instruction on teen-driving laws before a child takes his or her license test.
Fines are increased for certain moving violations and for violations of the passenger restriction, the curfew restriction and for cell phone violations.
On-road training is doubled, from 20 hours to 40 hours, for teens getting learner's permits after August 1.
Penalties are increased for teen drivers' passengers not wearing seat belts.
Suspension periods are increased for 16- and 17-year-olds for reckless driving and motor vehicle racing. (Suspension of six months for the first offense.)
License suspensions are established for speeding (60 days) and for use of cell phones (30 days) by 16- and 17-year-olds.
Teens who violate provisions of the graduated license rules would lose their privileges for 30 days.
To regain a suspended license, the 16- or 17-year-old and his parent or legal guardian must appear in person at the police department, state police barracks, or other designated location and sign a written acknowledgement of its return.

“I thank all the members of my Teen Driving Task Force,” Governor Rell said. “They did the leg work and the research, held the meetings, listened to the public’s ideas and made recommendations. I commend the legislature for this bipartisan effort."

“I also thank the public for providing our task force with valuable input during the statewide forums. You shared stories about your loved ones. You spoke of personal tragedies that could have been prevented. You had a major impact in crafting this law.”

The law, HB-5748, “An Act Concerning Teenage Drivers,” takes effect August 1, 2008.

Governor Rell Highlights Spring ‘OneThings’ for Homeowners, Businesses

With spring in the air and Earth Day on April 22, Governor M. Jodi Rell today recommended a number of springtime “OneThings” Connecticut residents and businesses can do to conserve energy and help protect the environment.

“The spring season is typically a time that reminds us of how beautiful our Earth is,” said Governor Rell. “It should also be a time when we reflect on the things we can do as individuals to preserve our planet. I encourage everyone in Connecticut to do their part. Our decisions about energy use can result in significant cost-savings, reductions in climate change and a cleaner, greener state.”

For residents, Governor Rell recommends these OneThings:

Make the most of spring cleaning. Clean the windows in your home and rely on natural light when possible.
When possible, air-dry your clothes instead of using the dryer. You could save $75 a year.
Plant deciduous trees to shade your house from the sun. You could save up to 8 percent on cooling costs.
Plan your summer vegetable garden. Cutting down on shipping from farms to stores saves gas and is healthier too!
Get your car tuned up to avoid fuel economy problems connected with spark plugs, dragging brakes or transmission problems.

Businesses and employees can save with these OneThings:

Bike to work once in a while. (I’m just picturing the traffic report from Mark the Shark or Rachel Not-a-Shark on this one: “Back up on I-95 caused by thousands of bicycles wheel to wheel…” That would be great!)
Make the refrigerator in the break room part of this season’s cleaning routine. Dust and dirt on the coils in the back can strain the compressor and waste energy.
If you have a window office, shut off the lights and let the sun shine in.
Take the stairs. It’s good exercise for you and reduces energy use in the building.
Schedule preventive maintenance on cooling systems to maximize performance and maintain efficiency.

These OneThing ideas include actual submissions from Connecticut residents to Governor Rell’s OneThing Web site, www.OneThingCT.com. A comprehensive list of OneThing ideas and important information about the rebates and incentives Connecticut has established for energy-conscious consumers can be found on the Web site. The site is also a place for people to formally register their own OneThing commitments and learn more about the OneThing Expo, a “World’s Fair” of conservation planned for October 10-12, 2008, at the Connecticut Convention Center.

The OneThing campaign leverages the momentum that can be achieved if everyone in the state took one step every day to save on their energy bills and make a positive contribution to the environment. If each of the state’s 3.5 million residents did OneThing a day, every day, for a year that would be more than 1.2 billion OneThings – more than enough to make a real difference on issues such as consumption, conservation and the use of clean and renewable energy.

The campaign is an extension of Governor Rell's Connecticut Energy Vision for a Cleaner, Greener State. The Governor’s energy vision was unveiled in late 2006 to create measurable ways to reduce the cost of energy for consumers and businesses, strengthen state energy policy over the long- and short-term and reaffirm Connecticut’s position as a leader in renewable energy.

Cursed Ortiz Jersey on Ebay

You've heard the stories and probably seen the news clips of the now infamous David Ortiz Red Sox Jersey that was buried by a construction worker at the new Yankee Stadium.

Since it was dug up earlier this week, it has now landed on auction site Ebay. The price for the tattered jersey is currently an amazing $36,300.00 and at 114 bids.

The sale of this jersey will benefit both The Jimmy Fund and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. The winner of the one-of-a-kind auction will receive his or her prize along with a new David Ortiz jersey while attending a Red Sox game. The auction ends on April 24th.

Tips For Teaching Kids to Go Green

When you were a kid, did the word "green" conjure images of Kermit sitting on a log singing about the difficulties of fitting in? Or perhaps it brought to mind Dr. Seuss's timeless classic about the questionably colored eggs and ham.

Chances are if you ask your child what he thinks of the "green" movement, he'll surprise you with his knowledge of - and passion for - the topic. Like any other major media message, kids are being inundated with information on the need to protect the environment.

"It's important for parents to help kids sift through all the information to find real ways they can make a difference, even at a very tender age," says Karen Farmer, a children's book author and environmentalist. "Kids can really feel empowered by participating in the green movement, and they'll be establishing environmentally conscious habits that will sustain them their whole lives."

With the approach of Earth Day 2008 on April 22 (click here for Earth Day Events in CT), many parents are wondering how they can nurture the budding environmentalist in their children. Here are some practical tips:

* Bag it. From Beijing to Annapolis, Md., communities around the world are banning the use of plastic shopping bags, which take approximately 1,000 years to decompose. Each year 500 billion plastic bags are used around the world, and the costs of bags given away "free" by retailers can top $4 billion annually.

Teaching youngsters to choose reusable cloth bags for shopping not only makes environmental sense, it could be preparing them for a world in which plastic shopping bags are no more.

"Choosing reusable, environmentally friendly bags versus plastic shopping bags, is an easy step even the youngest shoppers can take," says Farmer, who authored "My Bag and Me!" The book, for children 3 to 9 years old, tells the story of a little boy who always takes his own reusable bag to the grocery store when he shops with his mother. The sturdy, brightly colored board book illustrated by Gary Currant also includes a child-sized reusable bag that reads "I Love Earth." The bag is made of Tyvek, the same durable, recyclable material often used to insulate the exterior walls of new houses.

The book and the bag encourage children to make this environmentally sensible step an integral part of their daily lives. Children get the message that learning about and being environmentally conscious can be fun.

* Teach conservation. "If they're old enough to wash their hands on their own, kids are old enough to learn how to conserve water," says Farmer.

Parents should teach children to turn off the tap while brushing their teeth, and keep the water flow to a pencil-thin stream when washing their hands. As soon as they're old enough to safely stand in a shower stall and lather up on their own, toddlers transition from baths to showers. If your family doesn't have low-flow shower heads yet, engage older children in helping out with the very easy home improvement project of installing one.

* Reach for recycling perfection. "Recycling is one earth-friendly activity kids of all ages can get involved in," Farmer says. Children can learn what items regularly used in their homes can be recycled, from soft drink cans and milk bottles to detergent jugs and spaghetti sauce jars. Toddlers and preschoolers can participate in separating and grouping recyclables. Elementary school children can help with washing items and removing labels. Older kids can even get involved with volunteer groups that clean litter throughout the community and recycle trash found on the roadside.

MDC CELEBRATES EARTH DAY

Wetland Cleanup, Mercy’s Earth "Work" Day
Like many wetlands, our wetland was used as a dumpsite in the 50’s and 60’s and has never been cleaned up of the trash and litter – until now! We need help cleaning up litter and debris in our freshwater inland wetland. Our wetland provides the last filtration before directly entering Long Island Sound – help us protect the Sound and clean up this beautiful wetland in Madison. Refreshments will be provided. Greenwich Hibernian Association is sponsoring their 33rd annual St. Patrick's Day Parade. The parade will form at the Greenwich, Connecticut Town Hall at 101 Field Point Road, Greenwich, CT and march down Greenwich Avenue.

Open Cockpit Sundays at the New England Air Museum
Climb into the cockpits of up to 12 vintage aircraft, a full-motion flight simulator and two static flight simulators.
The aircraft to be open include the famous Vought Corsair of WWII, the North American F-100 Super Sabre, a DC-3 airliner, several helicopters and more. There will be additional special exhibits and demonstrations and different hands-on activities for children will be offered each month. For the convenience of all, a food vendor will be on site at each event serving sandwiches, snacks and hot & cold beverages.

Decorate Your Easter Eggs Naturally

Decorating eggs is a traditional craft practiced by families and artisans around the world.

Some use decorating methods handed down over generations, such as the elaborately decorated pysanky of Slavic nations or the cascarones of Mexico. Others invent new ways to embellish their eggs each year -- painting them, writing on them, turning them into funny faces, or trimming them with odds and ends from around the house. Many folks, though, prefer their eggs simply dyed in a rainbow of hues. For both children and adults, it can be fascinating to see the effects of dipping the eggs into different colored dyes.

You can decorate either hard-cooked eggs or empty eggshells. Hard-cooked eggs are a bit sturdier for children to use, while empty shells are best if you’re making an egg tree or want to keep the eggs on display for a considerable time. To dye your eggs, use commercial egg dyes, food coloring or dyes you make yourself from foods and spices. According to the American Egg Board, homemade natural dyes are easy to prepare and go well with all-natural eggs.

Simply toss your choice of a handful -- or two or three -- of one of the materials below into a saucepan. For spices, try a spoonful or two instead. Use your own judgment about quantity. This is an art, not a science. Add about a cup of water for each handful, so the water comes at least an inch above the dyestuff. Bring to boiling, reduce the heat and simmer from 15 minutes up to an hour, until the color is the shade you want. Keep in mind that the eggs will dye a lighter shade than the dye. Remove the pan from the heat.

To achieve the following colors, try these natural dye materials:

Pinkish red -- Fresh beets, cranberries, radishes or frozen raspberries
Orange -- Yellow onion skins
Delicate yellow -- Orange or lemon peels, carrot tops, celery seed or ground cumin
Yellow -- Ground turmeric
Pale green -- Spinach leaves
Green-gold -- Yellow Delicious apple peels
Blue -- Canned blueberries or red cabbage leaves
Beige to brown -- Strong brewed coffee or black tea
Brown-gold -- Dill seeds
Brown-orange -- Chili powder
Gray -- Purple or red grape juice or beet juice

Through cheesecloth, a coffee filter or a fine sieve, strain the dye mixture into a small bowl that’s deep enough to completely cover the eggs you want to dye. Add two to three teaspoons of white vinegar for each cup of dye liquid. With a slotted spoon or wire egg holder from a dyeing kit, lower the eggs into the hot liquid. Let the eggs stand until they reach the desired color. For emptied eggshells, stir or rotate for even coloring. With the spoon or wire egg holder, remove the eggs to a rack or drainer. Allow the eggs to dry thoroughly. Within less than two hours, refrigerate hard-cooked eggs that you intend to eat.

If you’d like a shiny finish, rub the dyed eggs with a bit of cooking oil. You can also use food-safe white glue to add natural decorations, such as beans, seeds, small pasta shapes or large pieces of spices. Be creative and experiment to express yourself in unique ways.

Food Safety Tips for Decorated Eggs

However you decide to color your hard-cooked eggs, follow these tips if you’d like to enjoy their high-quality protein later:

Wash your hands thoroughly before handling the eggs at every step, including cooking, cooling, dyeing and hiding.
If you won’t be coloring your eggs right after cooking them, store them in their cartons in the refrigerator.
Don’t color , hide or eat cracked eggs. And don’t eat eggs that have been out of refrigeration for more than two hours.
When coloring the eggs, use water warmer than the eggs.
Refrigerate the eggs in their cartons right after coloring and refrigerate them again after they’ve been hidden and found.
If you plan to use hard-cooked eggs as a centerpiece or other decoration and they will be out of refrigeration for many hours or several days, cook extra eggs to refrigerate for eating. Discard the eggs that have been left out as a decoration.
